Ellis Student Recognized with Award From Carnegie Museum

Ellis student Maya Winter, Class of 2022, was awarded the Carnegie Museum of Natural History Special Award for her Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) project, “Observing the Synchronous Responses of Horses to Rhythm Changes in Music.” Her entry also awarded her first place in the PJAS Junior High Zoology category, the Director’s Award in Zoology, and the Duquesne University Excellence in Scientific Pursuit Award.
Sue McClaren, Collection Manager for Mammals at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, presented Maya with her award at a Middle School assembly celebrating PJAS award winners. A judge at the junior high competition in February, McClaren shared that she knew right away that Maya’s project was special.

She explained, “The panel of judges unanimously agreed that Maya would receive the first place award. Of all the presentations we saw that day, hers was the most original. She figured out how to fit the project specifically to her interests and guided her efforts with in-depth research.”

As a first place winner in the regional competition, Maya will go on to compete at the PJAS state competition in May at Penn State University. Joining her at states are Ellis students and regional PJAS first place winners: Makayla Malandra, Class of 2022; Shivani Watson, Class of 2022; Hannah Barsouk, Class of 2021; Becca Rust, Class of 2019; Pallavi Muluk, Class of 2017; and Taylor Robinson, Class of 2017.

The Ellis School is incredibly proud of the hard work, preparation, and effort that went into student’s PJAS projects and wishes Ellis girls the best of luck at the state competition!
