Keith Webster Hosts Second Pow(h)er Hour

On Wednesday, April 19, The Ellis School was proud to present a second Pow(h)er Hour: Reimagining the Independent School Library. Hosted by Ellis parent and Dean of Libraries at Carnegie Mellon University, Keith Webster, the one-hour talk focused on 21st-century libraries, new-age learning spaces and how they impact learning.
A compelling speaker and true expert on the evolution of libraries in schools, Webster shared research that showed how libraries are adapting and responding to today’s rapidly changing world. Still frequented by students and faculty alike, campus libraries are not becoming a thing of the past, but instead transforming into experience-centered spaces with a variety of learning environments for independent and group work.

While libraries’ core business—the borrowing and exchanging of books—may be changing, Webster explained the mixed-use spaces are busier than ever as they facilitate the flow of information not just inside the building, but outside of it. A 21st-century library brings together learning spaces, global digital and print collections, and information specialists to support student needs and success.

This Pow(h)er Hour was particularly relevant to the Ellis community as preparations are made to reimagine the Ellis library as a 21st-century learning center. Webster’s talk generated ideas and discussion on how Ellis can best utilize the library space across divisions and disciplines to suit the School’s academic mission and goals. At Ellis, faculty and staff are committed to transforming learning environments to best support students as they learn, discover, and unlock their potential.

There is one more Pow(h)er Hour talk scheduled this spring: An Evening with Dr. Lisa Damour on Wednesday, May 17. For more information and to register for the upcoming Pow(h)er Hour, click here.
