Meet Sonia

Grade 7

Website designer.
All-star athlete.
Class president.

She's reinventing the wheel.

Seventh grader Sonia is closing the gender gap in STEM one day at a time. An inquisitive and innovative thinker, Sonia’s curiosity guides her path to discovery. In Ellis’ Girls Who Code and FIRST Tech Challenge clubs, you can find her tinkering with code, designing websites, and programming robots while simultaneously leading the next generation of computer scientists.
When she’s not in the science lab, Sonia is most likely on the soccer field—she plays for the Tigers and on three travel teams. Whether she’s working on her penalty kick or envisioning her next video game design, Sonia gives every task her best shot.

How Sonia goes after her goals at Ellis

List of 5 items.

  • Favorite spot on campus:

The science lab. "We do so many cool experiments, so there’s always something fun happening there. Recently, we did a bath bomb experiment when we were learning about acids and bases. We had to create our own bath bombs and see what happened when we changed different variables."
  • What she’s good at:

Soccer. “I love the sport and have been playing since I was really little. I play at Ellis and on three travel teams. I enjoy the freedom of being on the field and the rush of competitions.”
  • How Ellis builds her confidence:

Through stimulating extracurriculars like FIRST Tech Challenge, a club open to girls in grades 7 through 12 that challenges them to design, build, and program robots. "This was my first year in FIRST Tech Challenge and I loved it. I took on the role of programmer and worked on making our robot move so it could complete different tasks.”
  • Favorite subject:

"I’m really into computer science—I especially love coding and programming. I’m a member of Girls Who Code and I’m learning Python now. I’ve been designing a website and programming different games, too.”
  • What she likes most about Ellis:

The classes. "There are so many hands-on activities and experiments. With the smaller class size, I can focus on my work and reach out for help when I need it. No one here judges you if you have a question. I know I can be myself at Ellis."
