Meet Gracie

Grade 6

Giant Slalom skier.
Conscientious coder.
Someday scientist.

She’s an ace in science and on snow.

Solving problems comes naturally to sixth grader Gracie. Whether she’s finding the slope in math class or speeding down the slopes in a Giant Slalom race, Gracie’s ability to troubleshoot on the fly is the key to her success.

But that’s not the only tool in this downhill dynamo’s arsenal. She’s learning to code and putting her skills to the test as the programming lead on Ellis’ Middle School robotics team. For Gracie, it doesn’t matter if she’s up against altitude or algebra—she’s got the grit to change course if needed.

List of 5 items.

  • Favorite subject:

Science. "I like seeing science in action through hands-on experiments. Right now, we’re learning about consumer product testing. We tested microwavable popcorn from three brands to see how many popped and unpopped kernels there were in each bag. We counted every kernel!”
  • On her horizon:

Joining the Future City team. “I really want to join the Future City team next year and help contribute to the model city. I think it’s interesting the way the team comes up with unique solutions to the different problems.”
  • Coding crash course:

As a computer science student and member of FIRST LEGO League, Ellis’ Middle School robotics team, Gracie is delving into the world of computational thinking. “We’re learning about artificial intelligence and how it can help or harm the world in computer science. I’ve been able to use what I learn in class in FIRST LEGO League. My job is to write the code for the robots so they can complete the different missions.”
  • Alpine state of mind:

“I’ve been skiing since I was 18 months old, so pretty much since I could walk. I ski for the Hidden Valley Race Club and compete in the Slalom and Giant Slalom. Last year, I placed fourth for regionals. I love skiing because I feel so free.”
  • When she grows up:

“I want to be a scientist—maybe a physicist or a computer scientist. There are so many areas to explore and research.”
