Artist's Statement: My name is Dalia Milch, I am a senior and this is my fourth and final year of clay. Throughout my four years of clay I have learned many techniques, such as how to wedge and throw on the wheel, different methods of firing and glazing, and the importance of the definition of wabi-sabi. This definition was one of the first lessons I learned from Ms. Sturdevant.
Wabi-sabi means perfection in imperfection, a mistake made can lead to a whole new beauty. Working with clay is being able to feel it and letting it guide you especially when working on the wheel. It is an outlet for when I am stressed and want to get away from everything around me. One of the great things of being in clay is being able to bond with the other grades, since the classes aren’t grade specific. One specific time that is great for all the grades to bond is during empty bowls. Empty bowls is a time where all the clay students meet after school and throw a bunch of bowls on the wheels. The older students who have more experience get the opportunity to teach the younger students the art of using the wheel. Being able to help the other students learn the knowledge you have also makes you a better artist. These past four years have been amazing and I am so lucky to have Ms. Sturdevant as my teacher.
