Artist's Statement:
Throughout my years in high school, I've mainly focused on photography. I loved learning about developing black and white photos, printing them, and working different film cameras. I have adored working with studio lighting setups and shooting with digital cameras. Recently, I've been able to explore creative ways to present my artwork and learn to edit with Photoshop more effectively. I've gained great appreciation for the art of photography in my time at Ellis, and it is a hobby and skill I will be taking with me to college, and to my life beyond.
The works you see here today show my fascination for black and white photos, whether digital or film. I've loved photography because it allows us to capture intimate honest emotions and fabricate wild universes at the same time, and that's what I was looking for with The Crying Monster parts I, II, and III. The first image was captured with a digital camera and then manipulated in Photoshop, while the second two were taken with a YashicaMat 124 and developed in the darkroom. The sharp contrast and slight oddness of my work are indicative of the style that I've begun to develop during high school. The other image you'll see is also black and white, but done in a studio set-up I made in the middle school gymnasium with mat board and studio flashes. I then added clouds in order to produce a fog around the subject (Lexie!). During this process, I learned much about perspective, spacing, and editing clouds off the internet.
