Middle School Science Lab Renovation Nearing Completion

The renovation of Ellis’ Middle School science labs is underway and quickly nearing completion. Construction began in June and all three classrooms, the adjacent hallway, and the bathroom are taking shape under the expertise of the architect and contractor team, PWWG and Jendoco Construction.
Once complete, the newly designed spaces will support Ellis’ belief that middle school scientists learn best through hands-on experiences and collaborative problem solving. Teaching in the new labs is expected to begin in the coming weeks. Get a sneak peek of the progress below, and keep an eye on the Ellis website and social media outlets (especially Facebook and Instagram) for updates about the project!

    • Ms. Compton and Ms. Dame got a peek at the work-in-progress last month and are excited that they’ll soon be teaching in the labs! The renovated spaces will provide highly flexible classrooms that will allow our teachers to use the full variety of approaches they are always eager to use in their classes, but which have been more challenging to achieve given the previously static nature of the room configurations.

    • New cabinets, shelving, and sinks have been installed in the lab space, with more soon to come. As planned, all three classrooms, the adjacent hallway, and the bathroom area have been completely gutted and are well on their way to being reconfigured as new, accessible spaces. The renovation will also include the installation of an elevator to provide better access to both levels of the Middle School.

    • Painting has started and the ceilings are nearing completion, including lighting and retractable power sources for lab stations. The new configuration of these spaces will allow learners to move easily between collaborative small group work, hands-on lab experiments, class discussions and presentations, and individual work.
