Ellis Seniors Recognized as National Merit Scholars

Leela Canuelas-Puri, Class of 2018, Naveena Nanda, Class of 2018, and Pei Pei Barth-Wu, Class of 2018, have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for their exceptional academic promise. In order to be recognized as National Merit Scholars, Ellis students along with about 1.6 million juniors from more than 22,000 high schools, took the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT).
Leela has been named a 2018 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist and has been invited to compete for the National Hispanic Recognition Program. She received one of the highest scores in Pennsylvania and joined the group of 16,000 semifinalists that represent less than one percent of high school seniors. Leela was also invited to compete for the National Hispanic Recognition Program which recognizes 5,000 Hispanic/Latino students who take the test and earn top scores.

Naveena and Pei Pei have been recognized as Commended Students for their scores which placed them in the top 50,000.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition which began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test—a test which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.6 million entrants each year—and by meeting published program entry and participation requirements.
