Greetings in 2017!

It is exciting to come together in the New Year as a strong and vibrant community of learners—students, teachers, and families alike. Just as our girls learn and grow in this dynamic and innovative academic environment, we are pleased to offer parent education programs that serve as a forum for the exchange of ideas and for strengthening our community.
This spring, Ellis will host two parent education programs called Pow(h)er Hours.  If you are a long-time Ellis parent, you may recall our “Dine and Dish” series. We have renamed these programs to capture our “More Power to Her” focus throughout the school. Pow(h)er Hours are talks given by experts on relevant topics and trends in girls’ education, followed by lively conversation, mingling, and hors d'oeuvres. Both events are free and open to parents, friends, alumnae, and supporters of the School. Childcare will be provided for Ellis students during each event.

This series will kick-off on Thursday, March 16 at 6:00 p.m. with An Introduction to Maker Education, led by Ellis Director of Educational Technology, Tim Howard. An advocate and a problem-solver, Mr. Howard fosters the use of emerging technologies in the classroom and oversees computer science and robotics courses at Ellis. Mr. Howard is passionate about the power of maker education and new technology to engage students and teachers by enabling them to personalize learning and become creators of their own content through making. Members of the Ellis faculty from all three divisions will join Mr. Howard to discuss the many ways in which maker education methods and tools are woven into the curriculum at Ellis.

On Wednesday, May 17, Ellis will welcome New York Times bestselling author, Lisa Damour, Ph.D for An Evening with Dr. Lisa Damour starting at 6:00 p.m. Dr. Damour is the author of the New York Times bestseller, Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions into Adulthood. She also directs Laurel School’s Center for Research on Girls, writes a column for the New York Times’ Well Family online report, serves as a regular contributor to CBS News, and maintains a private psychotherapy practice.

Ellis’ 100 year tradition of producing lifelong learners extends to the parents, friends, and family members in our community. We are excited for these Pow(h)er Hours to bring us together in an intimate forum with some engaging speakers and thought-provoking topics. If there is any topic that you would like to see in the future, please feel free to contact me directly. As you know, my door is always open.
