Grade 4 creates birthday bags for neighbors in need

Each December students in grade 4 are invited by the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank to participate in a special service learning project: creating birthday bags. The students assemble festive gift bags with cake mix, frosting, party favors, and more, and the Food Bank distributes to area families who need help affording a birthday party for child.
Service learning is a vital part of the Ellis program. Research shows that girls learn best through hands-on projects that are related to their lives and create empathy. Ellis 4th grade social studies students recently learned about hunger and food insecurity in our region. According to the Food Bank's website, roughly 336,690 people (including 97,540 children) in our region are food insecure.
