Made with Code

A group of middle school students and teachers from Ellis attended Google’s Pittsburgh offices for Made with Code. Made with Code is an after school event of programs and resources that encourage girls to explore the world of computer science. During the visit the girls were challenged to create a custom avatar using graphical programming language they had never used before.  The activity tested each girl’s ability to collaborate with her partner and explore a new program with little or no instruction.
In addition to the coding activity the girls were given a tour of the offices while they learned about the past, present, and future of Google’s Pittsburgh location.

The event concluded with a Q & A session with a panel of four female Google software engineers. They fielded questions from the students and shared their passion for computer science and engineering. This event was an incredible experience for Ellis girls to see firsthand how much women are needed in computer science and STEM careers. Not many middle school aged girls have the opportunity to interview professionals in a field they are curious about, especially from a company as prestigious as Google. It was a day they will not forget.
