Ellis student awarded Global Empowerment grant

Congratulations to Ellis junior Charlotte Forsythe of Shadyside, who has been named the first-ever awardee of the Marcie WATERMAN Love ’56 International Travel Grant for the Global Empowerment of Women and Girls.  The Global Empowerment travel program was established at Ellis in 2015. During the summer before her a senior year, an Ellis student will pursue an independent study-abroad project of her own design that empowers women in developing countries.
Charlotte's proposal centered on women artisans from Peru. Charlotte will travel to the Inca Trail from June 13 to June 25, 2015. There she will work with the Grassroots Business Fund, an organization that invests in and supports Peruvian small businesses, such as Novica, which helps traditional artisans--many of whom are women--to create sustainable businesses that also preserve their traditional crafts and artistic practices.

The Global Empowerment travel program was inspired by Mrs. Love's own experiences traveling in developing countries. These experiences forever changed her and fortified her work as work as an advocate for women's equality and independence. Mrs. Love found Charlotte's proposal compelling and closely aligned with the award’s mission of fostering the empowerment of women.

"This particular project truly resonated with Ms. Love, who has actively supported microfinance organizations as a means to economically empower women, promote gender equity, and raise standards of living for entire families," said Dr. Susan Corbesero, Director of Global Initiatives and Chair of the History Department.

Charlotte will travel to Peru through an organization called Envoys, which runs the Social Impact on the Inca Trail program.
