Meet Sofia

Grade 10

Analog photographer.
Practiced thespian.
Service club president.

She’s looking beyond the lens.

Whether she’s behind the camera or in front of it, Sofia has a way of captivating an audience. Dedicated to honing her craft by embracing the iterative process, this tenth grader presents every performance and photograph through the lens of capturing the human condition.
Her world may turn technicolor on the stage, but her love for storytelling, regardless of the medium, is as simple as black and white.

How Sofia is pursuing her passions at Ellis

List of 6 items.

  • A project she’s passionate about:

A personal narrative she wrote in English class. “We had to compare ourselves to a character from Pride and Prejudice and I chose Mary Bennet. It was really refreshing because I don’t get to do that kind of self-analysis often. The essay ended up sounding really familiar, in the best way.”
  • Favorite spot on campus:

The photo lab. “During study halls, I love to go down to the darkroom and develop pictures. The process is so calming. My favorite is when I’m working on a really nice print and playing Pink Floyd.”
  • How she’s changing the world:

As President of Guild, Ellis’ service learning club, Sofia leads student community service initiatives. “I like getting people together to join a cause that’s bigger than themselves. We had a really successful coat drive this year and collected and distributed over 100 winter coats to people in need.”
  • On finding her photography niche:

“I like very simple black and white film photography. I prefer images that aren’t too busy. Color often makes things complicated, so if you take away the color, it’s more about the subject.”
  • On her horizon:

Playing Donkey in Shrek, the Upper School musical. “I’m really excited because it’s a comedic role. I love the acting process: analyzing a character and relating their experiences to my own to create different emotions and reactions on stage.”
  • Where she gets her confidence:

From the Ellis community. “At Ellis, it’s almost like people dare you to try something new because they know you can do it. In this community of awesome people, it’s easier to be interested and try new things because other people are doing it too.”
