Ellis Varsity Crew athletes performed extremely well on a 6,000m (6k) ergometer (erg) test on the indoor rowing machines on November 27. Lily Apostolopoulos, Class of 2021; Maggie Ginter-Frankovich, Class of 2020; Abby Hong, Class of 2019; Lela Krackow, Class of 2020; and Audrey Lyda, Class of 2020, set their personal bars very high and did not disappoint in their first ever 6k at Ellis.
Between 24 and 28 minutes long, the 6k test is meant to exhaust all of a rower’s energy to the point of complete physical exertion—a comparable metric would be running four miles at maximum speed. A notoriously difficult test the first time around due to athletes not knowing what pace at which to start, “erg” scores are used to determine the physical stamina and strength of rowers. These scores are not only crucial to boat selection, but collegiate-level recruitment with college and national selections taking the scores into consideration when selecting athletes.
The results of the first 6k test at Ellis proved that our athletes not only have the fitness base for the upcoming spring season, but the mental toughness needed to compete at a high level. Below is a summary of their results. Nice work ladies!
