Carnegie Mellon Engineering Students Visit Ellis

Carnegie Mellon University mechanical engineering students representing woMEn@CMU, a professional organization dedicated to connecting and supporting fellow female engineers, visited The Ellis School on Friday, October 27, 2017. The group joined the Middle School FIRST LEGO League robotics team practice to introduce mechanical engineering to students and to build community amongst girls interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields.
The women began with a presentation on water use and storage and explained to students how hydroelectricity, filtration systems, hydropower, and hydro storage work and function. From learning how dams generate power to the reasoning behind why water towers are so tall, Ellis students took notes and asked questions, curious about how engineering related to everyday things such as taking a shower.

When asked why they chose to pursue engineering as their college major, a common theme emerged among the women. They all enjoyed making things, working with their hands, and learning how things worked. And much like the members of Ellis’ FIRST LEGO League team, the women were interested in science and math at a young age, curious to learn more outside of the classroom, and eager to apply their skills in a hands-on way.

Following their presentation, the women facilitated a hands-on, maker activity for the robotics team that tested their problem-solving, critical thinking, and troubleshooting skills. Students were tasked with transferring water from one cup to another, sans pouring, and created a pump made out of straws and everyday materials to better understand the mechanics of the water cycle and pumps.

This unique opportunity and exposure to local engineering students empowers Ellis girls to envision themselves as mechanical engineers, and with only 7.9% of mechanical engineers being women, this representation matters. Through FIRST LEGO League and partnerships with Carnegie Mellon University, Ellis students gain valuable insights into engineering and science careers and see firsthand what it’s like to pursue a STEM field in college. Committed to engaging students in STEM early and often, The Ellis School aims to inspire the next generation of engineers, scientists, and mathematicians.
