Trib Cup: Ellis School girls look to take the next step

In Quinzale Taylor's first season as the Ellis School's girls basketball coach two years ago, he was first hoping to change the culture of the program. But now, after advancing to the postseason for the first time in 12 years a season ago, the Tigers are looking to take the next step in 2016 with a senior class that has led Ellis to a perfect 6-0 record and 4-0 mark in Section 4-A.
“I think every year since we've been there we've improved,” Taylor said. “The first year our job was to change the culture, which we did. We just missed the playoffs and then last year we went to the playoffs, and now the seniors are taking that ownership and saying ‘we want this to be a good senior year for us, and we want to not only make the playoffs, but we want to make a deep run and push for a championship.' ”

With their best start to a season in over a decade, the Tigers are highlighted as this week's Trib Total Media/WPXI High School Sports Award feature team, and are a big reason as to why Ellis is sitting in eighth place in the Class A standings.

Led by senior guards Dayna Rouse, Charlotte Forsythe, Kevelis Matthews-Alvarado and Olivia Muse, along with forward Isabel Brooke, the leadership of its upperclassmen has played a big part in Ellis' standing atop Section 4-A.
