Emily ’15

Describe a place where you are perfectly content. What do you do/experience there? Why is it meaningful to you?
The familiar sound of our gravel road and the glowing porch light of our cabin signal we’ve arrived. My excitement is masked by my exhaustion as I summon the last of my energy to pull my suitcase out of the car, into the house, and up the creaking flight of stairs. Through careful, closed-eye maneuvering, I fumble my way to the bedroom. I don’t bother unpacking. I just pull my knees into my chest, wrap myself in a cocoon of quilts and blankets, take one deep breath of the pine-scented cabin and easily drift off to sleep.
The next morning I usually wake up confused. Disoriented from the car ride of the previous day, I forget where I am, but only for a second. Once I remember, a feeling of pure joy rushes over me and I quickly sit up. The moment my feet touch the ground, I bound down the stairs, through the kitchen, out the door, and down to lake. My bare feet hit the wooden walkway, the dew-covered grass, the soft, shifting sand, and finally they run right into the cold water of Lake Webb. I look across the horizon to my favorite mountain range on Earth.
