Fifth grade experiments with dry ice

Grade 5 started the school year off working with dry ice in a unit on the nature of science. Students learned observation skills by testing a variety of substances and tools to see how dry ice behaves. The final activity involved designing and carrying out their own dry ice investigations.
Students worked in teams to write a hypothesis, list the materials and procedures used, identify the variables, create a data table, and to measure the outcome of their experiment. Upon conclusion, team members suggested questions for further research on dry ice.

In the next class, students learned to control variables in an investigation. They made predictions, then added dry ice to soap solutions and made observations. Students finished the class by learning why matter changes phases (solid to liquid to gas, and vice-versa) and how molecules "behave" during these phase changes.
