PROGRESS, Ellis to host negotiation workshop for girls
A powerful negotiation workshop for girls ages 8 to 13 is coming to Pittsburgh on May 2, 2015. Speak Up! Getting What You Want Through the Power of Negotiation is the annual negotiation workshop of PROGRESS (the Program for Research and Outreach on Gender Equity in Society) and teaches the importance of negotiating as well as effective negotiation skills. Participants will come away with practical skills they can apply to an array of negotiation situations, including avoiding risky behaviors, bullying, defying limiting expectations imposed by others, and later in life, equitable treatment in workplace and other competitive environments.
The workshop will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at The Ellis School through its Learning Innovation Institute and is open to all girls age 8 to 13 and the fee is pay what you can (suggested donation of $25 per girl).
Speak Up! was created by PROGRESS, which was established by Dr. Linda C. Babcock, to empower girls and women through the art of negotiation. Dr. Babcock is the James M. Walton Professor of Economics at Carnegie Mellon University and is a leading expert in the field of gender and negotiation.
Ellis Upper School students will serve as trainers and facilitators at the event, providing peer-to-peer instruction to program participants. PROGRESS and The Ellis School have been able to make this event pay-what-you-can so that all girls, regardless of financial capacity, are able to access and benefit from this workshop. All registration fees will be collected the day of the event. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Free parking is available at The Ellis School.
