Pre-K-Grade 1 students received an exciting visit from The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium on January 15. Zoo staff visted the Ellis After School Adventures Program to introduce students to animals from the African savanna. This new program, called Habitat Happenings, is a new Ellis partnership with the Pittsburgh Zoo. At Habitat Happenings, Zoo volunteers will present four hour-long sessions that introduce Ellis students to animal life and ecosystems.
Students met live zoo animals including two naked mole rats, a pancake turtle, a leopard gecko, and a fennec fox. They learned about the anatomy and defense mechanisms of elephants, zebras, lions and giraffes. Pittsburgh Zoo instructors also taught students about the life cycle of herbivores, carnivores, scavengers, and decomposers.
The next session will tackle the polar quest. Students will discover how certain animals survive in frigid ocean conditions. Subsequent classes will look at the unique environment of the rainforest, and the habitat and ecosystem of animals found in our own backyard.
