The Ellis School today announced the creation of a new Learning Innovation Institute to pilot, create, and share innovative practices that improve learning outcomes for girls and young women and their teachers. Based at Ellis, the Institute will serve as a hub of best practices for innovative approaches to learning in K to 12 girls’ and co-ed schools. Through the Learning Innovation Institute, Ellis will create new processes, study their efficacy, publish and share results, convene with other educational innovators, and foster new ways of thinking, seeing, and learning.
"Through The Learning Innovation Institute, Ellis is generating new approaches to education that uniquely prepare girls and young women to lead in creative fields ranging from science to medicine to arts to entrepreneurship," said Head of School Robin Newham.
The Learning Innovation Institute at The Ellis School focuses on five priorities:
Exploring how maker education, learning-by-doing, agile learning spaces, and active learning serve as launch pads for improving learning outcomes in K-12 environments.
Studying how girls learn and leading meaningful research and discussion about improving learning outcomes for girls. STEM and its intersection with the humanities will be a major focus.
Offering professional development for educators and administrators regarding innovative learning practices, particularly in the area of design thinking and blended learning.
Cultivating community partnerships and connected learning opportunities that empower girls and foster collaboration, communication, creativity, and connection.
Fostering global exchange of ideas, problem-solving, and dissemination of findings to benefit girls and young women worldwide.
Dr. Lisa Abel-Palmieri, The Ellis School’s Director of Technology and Innovation, will lead the Learning Innovation Institute.
“Grounded in the discipline of design thinking and the iterative approaches long advocated by academics and artists, The Learning Innovation Institute at The Ellis School is creating a culture in which teachers, students, and innovators in education and learning come together to create better learning outcomes for girls and young women,” said Dr. Abel-Palmieri.
The Learning Innovation Institute is an outcome of The Ellis School's strategic plan. The Institute advances the School’s focus on innovation and design thinking. Ellis has recently begun accumulating awards for innovation and excellence, including notice from Stanford University’s K-12 Lab, which named Ellis one of the first 50 schools on its list of exemplary K-12 design thinking programs.
