Ellis educators are leading the way in educational technology and presenting at national conferences. Ellis Director of Technology and Innovation Lisa Abel-Palmieri, Ph.D, recently presented at the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) conference during the sold-out "Speed Innovation" session.
Dr. Abel-Palmieri and Jason Curtis, her counterpart at the Hockaday School, presented "The Data Driven Flipped Classroom" and demonstrated how teachers may use learning analytics created through the flipped classroom teaching model to personalize and differentiate instruction for students of differing strengths and abilities. A flipped classroom is a form of blended learning in which students learn new content by watching video lectures online and usually not during class. Students do "homework" and complete projects in class where they receive greater personalized guidance and interaction with teachers instead of listening to lectures.
Dr. Abel-Palmieri discussed how The Ellis School uses online and cloud-based learning tools such as Reflex Math, Classroom Salon, the Haiku learning management system, and online cognitive tutors developed by Carnegie Mellon University to make informed decisions about student learning. She will make a similar presentation at the Classroom Salon Teachers Conference at Carnegie Mellon this spring with Upper School History teacher Rick Malmstrom.
In addition to NAIS and the Classroom Salon conference, Dr. Abel-Palmieri was selected as a presenter at FLIPCON14, an education conference taking place this June in Mars, PA. Her presentation "Creating An Environment for Active Learning in STEM Courses" will focus on The Ellis School's Active Classroom for Girls curriculum, classroom space, and related research funded earlier this year through a grant from the Edward E. Ford Foundation. The Edward E. Ford Foundation makes grants to support innovation in independent schools.
She will then fly to Atlanta to be a coach at FUSE14, a national design thinking conference held at Mount Vernon Presbyterian School for K-12 educators.
