As part of the School’s focus on introducing girls to cutting edge technology and innovation, the Ellis 4th grade recently took part in a Q&A with Dr. Andrew Watson, Ellis parent and Trustee, using telepresence technology like those used by UPMC and other international medical organizations. Dr. Watson, who was at his UPMC office downtown, spoke with Ellis 4th graders via a telepresence monitor, which transmits two-way video and audio conversations.
Watson explained that telepresence technology is used by medical professionals to connect patients and their doctors with specialists who might not otherwise be available in their communities.
Dr. Watson gave the girls a quick overview of the nervous system and then asked the girls what questions they had about how the nervous system works. The girls had recently completed a unit on neuroscience and the brain.
Future telepresence opportunities for Ellis students and Dr. Watson include Ellis girls role-playing that they are patients with medical questions using telepresence to communicate with doctors, conversations with doctors in France so the girls may practice their French language skills, and providing anatomy lessons to students in an Upper School anatomy and physiology class.
If you're interested in exploring Ellis for your daughter, let's connect! Request information about enrollment, attend one of our upcoming events, or hear about Ellis from those who know it best: our students.
