Students reducing Ellis energy usage

Lower School Environmental Ambassadors are reducing energy consumption here at Ellis by raising the funds to install an automatic light for the bathroom by the computer lab. The light, which uses motion sensors, will reduce energy usage and costs, both of which are important issues to the student leaders involved.  Lower School Environmental Ambassadors are students in grades 2 - 4 who meet weekly over lunch to discuss environmental issues that concern them. They then plan and execute projects to make a difference with those issues. Environmental Ambassadors have demonstrated leadership potential and a personal interest in sustainability.
The students met with Bernadette Scheid, Director of Finance & Operations, and Ed Richardson, Director of Facilities, to present their idea, discuss options, and make an action plan. The team set a fund raising goal of $160--or half the purchase and installation cost of the infrared sensor. The Ambassadors raised $281 at lunch time bake sales and exceeded their goal by $121. The extra bake sale revenue was divided between two local nonprofits that have sustainability missions: Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens and the Animal Rescue League.

Great job, girls!
