Ellis seniors compete in international math modeling contest

After just five weeks of training, a team of Ellis seniors submitted a paper to the High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM) that was judged to be among the top 11% of all papers submitted internationally. The contest, sponsored by The Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications (COMAP), is exceptionally rigorous and draws from the strongest math/science magnet schools in the US and China.
Most of the teams train for this contest by taking courses devoted to programming, engineering, and modeling. The Ellis team, after a 5-week introduction to mathematical modeling, submitted a paper about consumer behavior and fuel consumption.

The team members, all in the class of 2013, are Leah Kazar, Laina Cross, and Lizzie Shackney and were mentored by Ellis math teacher Amy Yam.

A second team of Ellis seniors, Erin West, Ramita Ravi, Aveeka Vats, and Sahar Shaikh, also competed, submitting a paper on how to best sustain and grow the elk population given annual rates of reintroduction into the US, specifically the Great Smoky National Park, since 2001.
