Boosted by Rosenthal's return, Ellis School tennis team looking strong
Three years ago, Ellis School tennis player Katie Rosenthal was the team’s No. 1 singles player and a WPIAL qualifier. But she could not be found on the court for the Tigers the past two seasons. Instead, she was playing in national events.
Now she has returned to her spot as Ellis’ top singles player and teams with the Tigers’ No. 1 player the past two seasons, junior Maeve McAllister, to form one of the best 1-2 punches in the WPIAL Class AA.
“With Kate back and Maeve here, it takes off a lot of the pressure for the other girls,” said Ellis girls tennis coach Doug Brooks. “They know they just need to get that third point to win the match. We’re looking fairly strong this season.”
Rosenthal moved back to her No. 1 spot during the summer challenge matches, passing last year’s WPIAL 3-AA Section champion McAllister. Freshman Sam Syme plays No. 3 singles for Ellis. Last year’s No. 3 singles player, Laina Cross, is currently nursing an ankle injury.
The tandem of senior Leah Kazar and junior Eugenie Arturo play No. 1 doubles for the Tigers. Sahar Sheikh and Charley Myers occupy the team’s No. 2 doubles position.
Brooks has high hopes for his team this year, which has yet to lose. But he says the Tigers will find out where they stand today when they play Vincentian Academy.
“It’s our biggest match of the year so far,” Brooks said. “Right now, they look like the team to beat. It’s two undefeated teams playing Thursday. We’ll need to bring our ‘A’ game.”
