Earlier this month, The Ellis School announced its 2012 Junior Book Awards.
The Junior Book awards are given to members of the class of 2013 who show exceptional promise in character, academic achievement, community service, or other criteria established by the colleges associated by each award. Each college’s alumni association selects and provides its book. Ellis faculty vote and select the awardees.
The 2012 Junior Book Awardees are:
Blaine Dinkin received the St. Lawrence University Book Award. The St. Lawrence University Book Award is given to a high school junior who has displayed a significant commitment to community service. St. Lawrence University provided Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace... One School at a Time by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin.
Sarah Ireland received the Skidmore Book Prize. The Skidmore Prize is awarded to a student who shows promise and excels in the field of English at the end of her junior year of high school. Sarah received the The Merriam-Webster Dictionary.
Leah Kazar was awarded the Harvard Book Prize. The Harvard Book Prize is given to an outstanding student in the junior class who combines excellence in scholarship with achievement in other fields. Harvard University provided the book The Harvard Book: Selections fom Three Centuries, Revised Edition by Betnick and Smith.
Shana Leshko received the Rachel Carson Award. The Rachel Carson Award is given by Chatham University to a junior who shows promise in the study of science or English and who is deeply concerned about the environment. This award identifies and honors a student who has the passion and commitment that Rachel Carson had to succeed in making a difference in her world. Shana received Silent Spring by Rachel Carson.
Elise Medeiros received the Dartmouth Book Award. The Dartmouth Book Award is given to a junior whose academic record is strong, whose character is exceptional, and who has made significant personal contributions to her school, local, and /or global communities. Dartmouth sent Miraculously Builded in Our Hearts: A Dartmouth Reader edited by Edward Connery Lathem and David M. Shribman.
Ramita Ravi received the Princeton Book Prize. The Princeton Book Prize is given to a junior who demonstrates intellectual promise and academic excellence, exemplary service or extracurricular activities, and outstanding personal character. Princeton University provided Paul Krugman’s book The Conscience of a Liberal.
Elizabeth “Lizzie” Shackney received the Yale Book Award. The Yale Book Award was given to a junior who displays “outstanding personal character and intellectual promise.” Yale University provided The Courage to Be by Paul Tillich.
Erin West received the Bryn Mawr College President’s Book Award. The Bryn Mawr College President’s Book Award is given to a junior who exhibits an intense intellectual commitment, a self-directed and purposeful vision of her life, and a desire to make a meaningful contribution to the world. Bryn Mawr College sent Riding the Bus with My Sister: A True Life Journey by Rachel Simon.
