Ellis is pleased to announce the upcoming visit of Sarah Culberson, a philanthropist, dancer, actress and co-author of the book A Princess Found.
Sarah Culberson was born in Morgantown, West Virginia to an African father and a white mother. As an infant, she was placed in foster care, adopted by a loving white family, and grew up contemplating her identity and her biracial roots.
She won an acting scholarship to attend West Virginia University where she had earned a B.A. in theater, graduated from The American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco with a Masters in Fine Arts and joined the Los Angeles professional acting and dance community. Culberson has been acting on stage, in film, and on television and appearing on such shows as Strong Medicine, All of Us, Boston Legal, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, and in the film American Dreamz.
Her biggest role came when she decided to locate her birth parents. Culberson discovered that her father lived in a village in Sierra Leone, West Africa. She learned that she is from a royal family, a Mahaloi, the granddaughter of a Paramount Chief, with the status of a Princess. The discovery of her unique heritage changed her life forever. Now, as co-founder and president of The Kposowa Foundation in Los Angeles, she and many others work to rebuild and improve opportunity for the people of Sierra Leone, and to improve education for the country’s youth.
In addition to raising awareness about Sierra Leone, Culberson speaks nationally and internationally inspiring young people and adults. She wrote A Princess Found, a book about her African roots and her pursuit to learn of her heritage.
Ellis parents are invited to a coffee/book-signing of A Princess Found with the author on Tuesday, February 14, 7:45 – 9:00 a.m. in the Gallery. Books will be available for purchase at the Paw Shop before February14th or outside the Gallery before the book-signing.
Students in grades 5 - 12 will attend a special assembly with Ms. Culberson, “Overcoming Your Deepest Fears and Making Your Dreams Come True”. She will also meet with students in small groups throughout the day.
