7th grade students are busy designing and creating two quilts -- one to be hung here in The Ellis School, and one to be donated to the new Children's Hospital. All of this is funded in part by an anonymous donor and by a matching grant from the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts in partnership with the Pennsylvania Council on the arts. Through this program, Ellis is fortunate to have fiber artist Tina Brewer on campus.
The goal of the residency program at Ellis is to allow students to regularly connect with working artists, both as a part of their "art careers" unit and in conjunction with "Project 7th Grade", a cross-disciplinary curriculum unit. Tina Brewer's approach to quilting is to share a traditional art form while creating a symbolic language through fiber. The result is a spontaneous explosion of color, form, texture, and fun. Her approach to quilting is fabric collage, utilizing layers of opaque and transparent fabrics to build a story quilt with a personal touch.
The story in the Ellis quilts is "250 women of western PA, in celebration of the Pittsburgh 250 initiative.
