Revitalized Weight Room Inspires Strength, Wellness, in Ellis Community

The Ellis School is thrilled to unveil its newly renovated weight room — a dynamic space designed to support the health, wellness, and performance of the Ellis community. More than just a makeover, this revitalization represents a bold investment in student well-being and the power of girls’ athletics.
This transformation brings together cutting-edge fitness technology and thoughtful design to create an environment where student-athletes and physical education classes, as well as faculty and staff, can thrive. The upgraded facility features custom Ellis-branded weights, and an expanded layout that accommodates a variety of training needs, from strength and conditioning to functional and high-intensity workouts. The addition of equipment such as Precor treadmills, ellipticals, and a stair climber, along with four Peloton bikes, three squat racks, dual-function strength stations, and a dedicated functional training area, ensures every student-athlete has the tools to meet their goals.

Ellis’ Director of Athletics, Dr. Reneé Brown-Antonelli, led the project with a vision to elevate both student-athlete performance and community spirit.

“Having led similar projects at previous institutions, I’ve seen firsthand how a well-designed, fully equipped training space can transform not only athletic performance, but also school culture and engagement,” she said. “I wanted to bring that same energy and investment to Ellis—to create a space that reflects our values and supports the growth of our students in every way.”

Interim Head of School Gary J. Niels shared his support for the project, noting the benefit to Ellis’ student-athletes.

"I am more than excited to support Dr. Brown's vision for an updated fitness facility,” Mr. Niels said. “I am personally committed to building the strength and conditioning of our Ellis athletes to enable them to reach their athletic goals."

And beyond the new machines is something more meaningful: Ellis’ commitment to empowering girls and young women through movement. Research shows that 82% of women executives once participated in sports, and that girls who play sports develop greater confidence, stronger relationships, and a deeper sense of purpose. The new Ellis weight room will help nurture those same qualities in today’s students, fostering not only physical fitness but also resilience, teamwork, and leadership.

“This renovation represents more than just new equipment—it’s a commitment to elevating the experience for everyone at Ellis,” Dr. Brown-Antonelli said. “Whether you're training for competition, building lifelong fitness habits, or teaching the next generation the value of movement, this space is here to support you.”
