Ellis Students Perform in Shakespeare Monologue Contest Showcase
Ellis students Nora Brown and Mia Carter, both Class of 2023, entered the 25th Annual Shakespeare Monologue & Scene Contest at the Pittsburgh Public Theater where they performed a scene from Twelfth Night as Viola and Olivia. The scene earned them a place in the finalist showcase. Madeleine Mocker, Class of 2025, also entered through the Hope Academy with a scene from Romeo and Juliet and a monologue from Henry IV. The scene earned her a place in the finalist showcase and the monologue earned her an honorable mention.
The girls spent a lot of hard work and energy preparing their performances for the contest. They attended coaching sessions from January 7 to February 1 both at the theater and at Ellis or the Hope Academy before the preliminary round. Once it was time to perform, students presented over the course of 10 days in front of groups of judges. The judges then evaluated each performance and selected winners in the Upper Division (grade 8–grade 12) and Lower Division (grade 4–grade 7) for both scenes and monologues. If they were selected as a finalist, students performed at the finalist showcase on February 18. They were selected from over 1,000 students that participated.
