In partnership with the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy at Frick Park, students of The Ellis School participate in both the Urban EcoStewards program and the Habitat Explorers Club.  This partnership provides hands-on learning, guided by PPC instructors and Ellis faculty, which correlates with classroom science study.  

Through this program, students will:

• Build the development of an environmental ethic and sense of place through experiential learning
• Develop a lifelong commitment to environmental responsibility and an awareness of human impact on our surroundings
• Engage in action to effect positive change on the environment

The program includes age-appropriate activities in the Park, including:

• Exploration of the Park’s habitat including woodlands, meadows, and streams
• Stewardship of many aspects of the habitat, including preparing the flower beds for winter, removing invasive plants, and tree restoration
• Scientific experimentation and observation
• Hands-on restoration to improve the Park

This program has reinforced our commitment to developing leaders who will  make a difference for our local environment.
