Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy
In partnership with the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy at Frick Park, students of The Ellis School participate in both the Urban EcoStewards program and the Habitat Explorers Club. This partnership provides hands-on learning, guided by PPC instructors and Ellis faculty, which correlates with classroom science study.
Through this program, students will:
- Build the development of an environmental ethic and sense of place through experiential learning
- Develop a lifelong commitment to environmental responsibility and an awareness of human impact on our surroundings
- Engage in action to effect positive change on the environment
The program includes age-appropriate activities in the Park, including:
- Exploration of the Park’s habitat including woodlands, meadows, and streams
- Stewardship of many aspects of the habitat, including preparing the flower beds for winter, removing invasive plants, and tree restoration
- Scientific experimentation and observation
- Hands-on restoration to improve the Park
This program has reinforced our commitment to developing leaders who will make a difference for our local environment.
