Lower School Art Teacher
The Ellis School, the only pre-kindergarten–grade 12 independent day school for girls in Pittsburgh, PA, is seeking a full-time Lower School Art Teacher beginning in August 2023. This position will include teaching pre-kindergarten–grade 4 students.
The ideal candidate will be an artist-educator who holds a studio art and/or art education degree or the equivalent with teaching experience in elementary education, museum education, and/or a Reggio Emilia-based educational environment. They will have a broad range of studio knowledge in 2D and 3D media and a growth-mindset toward technology integration in the art room. Candidates should also have experience collaborating with colleagues, parents, and community. They will work with students in a variety of materials and mediums in a fast-paced environment.
Job responsibilities will include:
Assessing student progress and performance in art, as well as in areas of social interaction, behavior, and emotional growth
Teaching students art fundamentals, art history, and visual thinking skills
Effectively and collaboratively working in a team of visual art instructors in a dynamic, multi-divisional art department
Developing a spiraling curriculum within the Visual Arts Department
Building meaningful community connections
Being proficient with advanced computer literacy, including ProCreate, Adobe Suite, and Google Classroom, for both administrative and instructional purposes, as well as having strong interpersonal and written communications skills. Makerspace skills, including laser cutting and 3D printing, are a plus.
Working with colleagues in preparing and exhibiting student artwork throughout the year and during our biennial Fine Arts Festival with the Performing Arts Department
Partnering with colleagues in other important duties across the life of the school: cross-disciplinary collaborations, off-site education experiences, family/community events, etc.
Note: Additional (optional) teaching opportunities include after-school, spring/winter break camps, and summer studio classes.
