Take me to the river

Crew, it seems, is not for the faint of heart.

In addition to hours spent practicing and competing, team members are required to carry, and at times disassemble and reassemble heavy (not to mention, expensive) equipment.
According to Dori Tompa, executive director of the Steel City Rowing Club and a rower herself, a 4-person boat weighs about 120 pounds, stands 40 feet long, and can cost some $20,000. “The girls work together to carry the shells back and forth from the boat house to the (Allegheny) river.” That’s a distance of nearly 70 yards or more than half a football field.

Yet, despite these demands, or more accurately because of them, Ellis students are taking to crew like scullers in water.

Early adopters of the sport—Allie and Zoe Papernick (Class of 2016)—started when they were just freshmen. Back then, they were pretty much on their own. But Allie knew her classmates would get on board once they gave it a try. “Crew is about being your best self,” she says, “and striving to improve.”

She was right. Thanks to their ongoing recruiting efforts, the Ellis team now boasts six varsity and 16 junior varsity members.

Although Zoe admits that getting up early for practice is still really hard, it’s totally worth it. “I love how peaceful the water is in the morning,” she says.
