Anna Redcay to chair Ellis English Department

Anna Redcay, Ph.D. has been named Chair of the English Department and Upper School English Teacher. An instructor since 2005 at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Redcay is known for balancing intellectual rigor in the classroom with cheerful support. A highly experienced teacher, she recently completed a three-year Visiting Lectureship at Pitt, where she taught classes in women’s studies, children’s literature, and visual literacy.
Her strengths include developing courses and activities that scaffold students’ development in literary analysis, while also fueling their enthusiasm for reading.

With a B.A. in English Literature/Creative Writing from Princeton University and a Ph.D. in Critical and Cultural Studies from the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Redcay empowers students with a love of literature and writing by finding threads between the works they discuss in class and the larger world. She told us in her cover letter that she draws upon her experiences as an English major at Princeton to “develop of variety of composition methods and forms to deepen students’ evaluations of critical text and terms.”

Dr. Redcay not only studied childhood and adolescent literature but worked for nonprofits such as Head Start where she provided after school and behavioral therapy programs directly to children and teens.

She was a 2011 nominee for the Elizabeth Baranger Excellence in Teaching Award and a 2009-2010 Mellon Predoctoral Fellow. Her doctoral research examines the role published child authors (ages 18 and younger) play in establishing or reinforcing cultural ideas about childhood creativity. Funded by generous grants and fellowships, Dr. Redcay investigated archives of children’s writing in the National Library of Scotland and the British Library. She is at work on a book manuscript based upon this research and has published in Children’s Literature and Critical Quarterly. She has also presented at conferences in England and the United States.

She is excited to begin a new phase of her career at Ellis, where her own daughter will attend kindergarten. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Redcay to the Ellis community.
