Ellis students learn to draw with computer code

As part of is ongoing commitment to the arts and sciences, Ellis 7th grade students have worked with Caroline Record, a Fellow with Carnegie Mellon University's Studio for Creative Inquiry, and independent artist Andrew Bueno to learn how to use computer code to create digital works of art.
Record and Bueno met with Ellis 7th graders over four weeks to conduct the "Drawing With Code" workshop series. The series was organized by Ellis arts faculty member and assembly coordinator Linda Tonetti Dugan to build on the School's outstanding instruction in the use of digital and traditional media for visual arts.

Drawing with Code provided students with access to and training in  a variety of creative means for creating dynamic drawings through computer programming. The workshops were broken into three sections: Making up the Rules, Creating Drawing Tools, and New Places to Put Drawings. Through the workshop, students were exposed to groundbreaking works by artists such as Sol LeWitt, C.E.B. Reas, Trisha Brown, and Camille Utterback.

Speaking about their time at Ellis, Ms. Record said that, "The students jumped right into programming! They modified existing code examples that did everything from simulating how birds flock to using open source facial tracking to make drawings with their noses."
