Computer Science Teacher Honored with Chu Family Award

Michele Lombardi, Middle and Upper School Computer Science Teacher, has been awarded The Chu Family Faculty Fellowship Award for the 2017–2018 school year. The Chu Family Fund for Faculty Excellence was established in 2003 by the Chu family to honor Ellis faculty members for their dedication to academic excellence and for their diligent commitment to the School and its students. Presented annually, the award supports a wide array of curricular and professional development work.
This year’s award will go toward Ms. Lombardi’s attendance at the Computer Science Teachers Association conference this July in Omaha, Nebraska. A dynamic and innovative educator, Ms. Lombardi teaches students how to think critically, problem-solve strategically, and collaborate effectively through coding, programming, and technology. From leading the Girls Who Code club in the Middle School to teaching computational thinking in AP Computer Science, Ms. Lombardi is dedicated to ensuring Ellis students are versed in computer ethics and digital literacy. She has a B.S. in Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science from Ramapo College of New Jersey and an M.S. in Learning Technologies with a concentration in Game-Based Learning from Drexel University.

“It is an honor to be recognized among our amazing group of faculty members with the Chu Family Fund for Faculty Excellence Award,” said Ms. Lombardi. “I’m looking forward to attending presentations on developmentally appropriate ways to talk about machine learning and hearing Andy Gonzalez’s Girls Who Code success story at the keynote. My conversations at CSTA will inform ongoing development of the K-12 computer science curriculum at Ellis.”

The Chu Family Faculty Fellowship Awards are presented in memory of all the ancestors of the Chu family, especially John Wen-Djang Chu and Helen Yu Li Chao Chu, the parents of former trustee Otto H. Chu and the grandparents of alumna Alexa CHU ’07.
