Ally Hassoun, Class of 2018
An Ellis student since grade 3, Ally Hassoun, Class of 2018, is Student Council president, a member of the tennis and track and field teams, and an avid Pittsburgh Penguins fan. When she’s not studying, cheering on the Pens, or at practice, Ally volunteers at her church in Nevillewood and works with their Sunday and Vacation Bible School programs. Next fall, Ally will move her schooling from the East End to Downtown and study pharmacy at Duquesne University.
Was there a teacher or teachers at Ellis who had a particularly strong influence on your life?
Ms. Adler has been my advisor for the past three years and has always been there for me. She not only offers great advice, but she makes me laugh and I know I can always talk with her. Also, Ms. Wadsworth—I just loved her anatomy class and the way she taught it. She made me realize medicine is what I want to pursue after I graduate. Her class really helped me decide where to go next.
What does ‘Esse Quam Videri’ mean to you?
It means to be the best version of yourself. Because of Ellis, I’ve learned to not care as much about what other people think of me. Here, I can say what's on my mind and it's not immediately shut down or rolled off as unimportant. The all-girls environment has taught me that my voice matters.
Fill in the blank: “I will always remember…”
The Lower School musical in grade 4, we performed the Jungle Book. I’m not into theater, so it really pushed me out of my comfort zone. The whole class came together and we just had so much fun.
What will you miss most about Ellis when you graduate?
My friends and the teachers. I've connected with so many teachers on such a personal level and I don’t know if I’ll be able to find that anywhere else.
What advice would you offer to future seniors?
Don’t stress unless you have something to stress out about! I can’t tell you how many times I didn’t take this own advice. Be patient throughout the college process—you will end up where you are meant to be.
Which subject do you think prepared you most for life after high school?
Definitely English. The English department is so strong at Ellis, I’ve realized that my writing is even better than I thought it was. I can seriously write a four page paper in my sleep now! My English teachers have pushed me to become a better writer, and I know that I can become one because they believe in me.
How would you describe yourself in three words?
Caring. Fun. Humorous.
What is the last book you read?
The last book I read for fun was The Maze Runner by James Dashner, I’ve read it five times.
What is your most listened to song on your morning commute this year?
"Give Me Love" by Ed Sheeran.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
As a pharmacist—independent, living on my own, and hopefully in a happy relationship!
