Cum Laude Inductees Exhibit Academic Excellence

The Ellis School inducted outstanding student scholars into the Cum Laude Society on Wednesday, April 18. Yumika Amemiya, Class of 2019; Emmy Hsiung, Class of 2019; Emma Schell, Class of 2019; Olivia Simon, Class of 2018; and Yolanda Zheng, Class of 2018 were recognized for their academic excellence at this year’s assembly. This honor of great distinction commends students for their impressive scholastic performance, rigorous course of study, and commitment to the highest ideals of scholarship.
Lauren Laschon, Head of the Upper School, announced the names of the new inductees as 2017 Cum Laude scholars Pei Pei Barth-Wu, Class of 2018; Leela Canuelas-Puri, Class of 2018; and Natasha Kossovsky, Class of 2018 presented each honoree with their Cum Laude pin. As each student walked to the stage to accept her pin, a wave of applause erupted from the crowd and it was obvious to all in attendance that, at Ellis, each student’s individual successes are celebrated and applauded. From family members and teachers to classmates and teammates, the network of support runs deep and spans from student’s first day at Ellis to commencement and beyond.

After the scholars were announced, alumna and keynote speaker Susan SCHUMACHER Morris ’62 spoke about her illustrious career in broadcasting and her time at Ellis. She reflected on the twists and turns her own path took post-graduation and shared how her degree in government did not hold her back from pursuing a career in broadcasting. A tremendous champion of Ellis for over fifty years, Susan’s message of perseverance and resilience in the face of the unknown was authentic and meaningful to Upper School students who themselves are on the cusp of their next chapter.

The ceremony closed with words of congratulations from Head of School Macon Finley who commended the day’s inductees for their “sustained and mature commitment to learning” and willingness to “stretch themselves and their thinking to the edge of their comfort zone.”

Congratulations to the 2018 Cum Laude inductees:

Yumika Amemiya, Class of 2019
Emmy Hsiung, Class of 2019
Emma Schell, Class of 2019
Olivia Simon, Class of 2018
Yolanda Zheng, Class of 2018
