A Sense of Community at Ellis

As a teacher, I have always loved witnessing students’ growth this time of year. I’ve seen this during my classroom visits this month—whether it be watching girls perform sophisticated science experiments, create original vinyl designs in our makerspace: The Foundry, or argue about translations in Latin class—the change is noticeable and impressive.
My focus this fall has also included listening to our community tell their stories about the School. I’ve met with the vast majority of the faculty and staff, visited with students at all grade levels, attended alumnae events in Chicago and New York, and joined parents for community conversations in each division to share their experiences of Ellis.

I’ll be sharing what I’ve learned in these many interactions with you over the coming months but a common thread through all of these conversations has been the importance of relationships and a strong sense of community. It is a key element of our identity that initially drew me to Ellis and it resonates deeply with so many of us. It enables Ellis girls to be known, nurtured, challenged, and supported, and it is the glue that binds us together in a very special way. As we turn our heads toward 2018, I want us to continue to celebrate and strengthen our sense of community here at Ellis and to be sure that every girl and her family feel welcome, known, and included.

I hope you and your families will have a safe, healthy, and joyful time together during this winter break, whatever your traditions might be this time of year, and wish you good health and happiness in the new year.
