A Perfect Career: 5 Seniors Achieve 4 for 4

Winning a championship is quite a feat in itself, but winning four consecutive championships in a row is, for most teams, unfathomable. At Ellis, it is a reality for five members of the Class of 2018; Emma Bisello, Corinne Hartman, Lysa Meyer, Angie Scheuermann, and Olivia Simon.
As freshmen in 2014, this group of seniors stepped onto the field, some with experience and some with none, under the direction of field hockey legend Coach Genny Kuzosko “Coach K” and teammate Mackenzie HANEY ’15. They learned the game, their individual strengths, and roles from Coach K and their teammates, and worked hard in the offseason to train and grow individually as players. But their sophomore season began with some doubts and fears as Coach K retired and valuable players graduated.

When I became head coach their sophomore year at Ellis, I approached the game with a new mentality, one foreign to the Tigers—one with heavy conditioning, advanced skills, higher expectations, and different game strategy. These five girls rose to the challenge and all started their sophomore year. They pushed themselves and each other, and began to bond the team together as a “family.”

Emma became a powerhouse in the defensive zone, proving herself on the field with big hits and physical toughness against opponents. Her talents as a defender didn’t go unnoticed, and she was named a Belleville All-Tournament Player three years in a row.

Corinne began her freshman season with no field hockey experience, but self-taught over the summer and started as a left midfielder her sophomore year, taking notes from big sister, Charlotte FORSYTHE ’16. She soon became a force in the center mid position and will end her career as a defender and part of the WPIAL Section A All-Conference Team.

Lysa’s strength on the field came from her defensive to offensive transition. When I became the coach, she moved from a forward to a midfielder, and soon became a wall on the left side with persistent jabs and counterattacks against opponents.

Angie also changed positions under my direction, moving from midfield to a forward, and soon after broke the Ellis record for goals scored in a season with 22. She was also named a Post-Trib Player of the Week, the 2016 MVP, and earned a spot on the WPIAL Section A All-Conference Team in 2016.

Eager to step into a leadership position her senior year, Olivia earned the role as the comforter on the team and was part of 52 out of 58 goals scored last year. With her deflections in the cage and constant pressure on opponent’s goalies, her skill set really shined on post play in the circle.

These five seniors have left a legacy for Ellis’ field hockey underclassman to live up to, and are on the road to accomplish even more as they prepare for the opening round of the PIAA state tournament. As the first class in Ellis history to win four consecutive WPIAL titles during their four years in the Upper School, I thank them for doing it with such leadership, growth, and class. Let’s go, Tigers!

The Varsity Field Hockey Team plays Forbes Road in the first round of states today at 3 p.m. at Latrobe High School.
