Ellis Hosts Chatham Students

The Ellis School was proud to partner with Chatham University on August 25, 2017 as part of the Chatham Career Launch. The Chatham Career Launch initiative partners Pittsburgh institutions and businesses with incoming Chatham University students to offer them a real-world glimpse of professions within their field of study.
Head Chatham Women’s Basketball Coach Sandra Rectenwald chaperoned the students to Ellis and said, “the Chatham Career Launch is a worthwhile part of orientation as it allows our new college students to explore their ultimate goal and career just as they have arrived at Chatham University. The experience can strengthen the student’s resolve to study their major and may also open them up to the possibility of a different path.”

Ellis faculty from all three divisions and Head of School Macon Finley welcomed the group to the School and hosted a roundtable discussion and Q&A session for the students on education. Reflecting on their career paths and experiences as teachers, faculty members discussed what’s worked for them, what hasn’t, and what they think new educators should know before they’re in the classroom while fielding questions from students.

“It was absolutely amazing to share our passion with new Chatham University students. To see future teachers who are at the start of their career, and to potentially have an impact on them and the direction they go, is very inspiring as an educator,” said Interim Head of the Lower School Susan Freudenberg.

Following the discussion, faculty led the Chatham University students on a tour of Ellis’ campus, active classrooms, and common spaces and offered insights on Ellis’ curriculum and mission. Through this experience, Chatham University students had the opportunity to network and connect with Ellis teachers, and learn more about an independent school just minutes from their own campus.

Ellis was proud to welcome the future educators to the School and to work with Chatham University. Sandra added, “The Ellis School has been a partner for Chatham University for many years and was a gracious host to our students. The stories shared by the teachers and administrators were inspiring and thought-provoking. Our students are looking forward to returning to Ellis to observe the dynamic staff in action.”
