Underclassmen Awards and Book Prizes Announced

Five members of the Class of 2018 and one member of the Class of 2019 received Book Prizes and Underclassmen Awards at the Upper School Closing Assembly on Tuesday, June 6. Students who show exceptional promise and character in academics, arts, community service, and extracurricular activities are considered for underclassmen awards. Book Prizes are awarded by each college’s alumni association and Underclassmen Awards are voted on and selected by Ellis faculty.
Leela Canuelas-Puri, Class of 2018, received the Harvard Book Prize.
The Harvard Book Prize is given to an outstanding student in the junior class who displays excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement in other fields.

Natasha Kossovsky, Class of 2018, received the Bryn Mawr College President’s Book Award.
The Bryn Mawr College President's Book Award is given to a junior who exhibits a true love of learning and intellectual curiosity about the world around her.

Yolanda Zheng, Class of 2018, received the Princeton Book Prize.
The Princeton Book Award is given to a junior who displays academic excellence and intellectual promise, exemplary service or extracurricular activities, and outstanding personal character.

Alison Taylor, Class of 2019, received the Calloman Underclassman Award.
The Callomon Underclassman Award is given to an underclassman who, as exemplified by former Upper School Head Judith Callomon, shows potential for leadership in the school.                                                                 
        
Jamaya Purdie, Class of 2018, received the Foster Art Award.
The Foster Art Award is presented annually to a junior art student chosen by the visual arts faculty who shows promise as an artist; who values the process of creating art; and who has the potential to excel in her craft.

Ashley Priore, Class of 2018, received the Virginia P. Stevenson Award.
The Virginia P. Stevenson Award, named for a former chair of the Ellis History Department, is presented to a junior who conceives, investigates, and produces a history research paper that goes beyond others in thinking, content, and style. Possible recipients are nominated by History Department faculty, and the award recipient is selected by an independent panel of readers.
