Ellis Students Attend Society of Women Engineers High School Day

On October 21, Ellis Upper School students, along with Upper School Computer Science Teacher, Michele Lombardi, had the opportunity to attend Carnegie Mellon University’s section of Society of Women Engineers (SWE) High School Day.
SWE holds their annual High School Day to reach out to high school girls and promote women entering STEM-related fields.

During the event, students learned about various engineering and STEM disciplines through multiple workshops led by professors, graduate students, and undergraduate students.

In order to participate, Ellis students ranked their interests in seven categories, and were placed into three activities, one per session.

In the Electrical and Computer Engineering workshop, students had fun soldering and working with circuits, resistors, switches, LEDs, and capacitors. The girls also had the opportunity to hear a professor speak about his research on insulin delivery through the Biomedical Engineering workshop, participated in a workshop on Material Science and Engineering, and learned about the tradition of Buggy Races at Carnegie Mellon.

According to the National Science Foundation, women make up 46% of the total workforce but hold only 24% of jobs in technical or STEM fields. It is important for girls to participate in events like SWE’s High School Day so that students can witness first-hand the success of women in the engineering field.

The Society of Women Engineers was established in 1950 as a not-for-profit educational and service organization and their mission is to promote the image and success of women in engineering, by providing resources for personal and professional development and a community that advocates diversity and awareness.

Their vision is to create a world where men and women have equal professional opportunities and they hope, “female engineers will no longer identify themselves as female engineers, but instead, as engineers.”
