Macon Paine Finley Announced as 15th Head of The Ellis School

In January 2016, The Ellis School announced that Robin Newham would be retiring at the end of the 2016-2017 academic year and that a search had begun for her successor. That search process has successfully come to an end with the naming of the next Head of The Ellis School, Macon Paine Finley.
Macon will be the 15th Head in The Ellis School’s 100-year history. She will join Ellis from John Burroughs School in St. Louis, where she has been Assistant Head of School since 2012, and where she has been an educator since 2000.

Macon stood out in a truly impressive pool of candidates from across the country due to her impeccable track record as an educator with an emphasis on STEM. She is an accomplished business and academic professional. In addition to the many attributes she will bring to the position of Head of School, she will serve as a role model for Ellis students.

Prior to her current post at John Burroughs School, Macon had served as the school’s Director of Academics, the Principal for grades 7 and 8, and a Mathematics Teacher. In addition, she has served as a member of John Burroughs School’s Diversity, Education and Values committees; as an Admissions Interviewer and a member of the Admissions Decisions Committee; and as Chair of Faculty Executive Committee.

Among her many accomplishments at John Burroughs, Macon led the development of cross-curricular STEM initiatives tied to the building of a new center for science, engineering, computer science and library programs.

Before joining John Burroughs, she was an accomplished executive and professional, having served in product management at Ralston Purina, as a Market Research Analyst at Pacific Gas and Electric Company, and as a Researcher in biostatistics at both Washington University in St. Louis, and at Stanford University.

Macon received her bachelor’s degree in statistics from Princeton University. While at Princeton, she earned honors with a lifetime teaching certification in Mathematics, and was a varsity basketball player. She earned her master’s degree in Business Administration (M.B.A.) from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business, where she was named an Arjay Miller Scholar (top 10% of her class).

One thing you will find when you meet Macon is that she is passionate about her community. Macon was cofounder and the first Board President of St. Louis Regional Child Care Partnership, a nonprofit organization focused on improving childcare services in the St. Louis area. In addition, she started and taught an after school tutoring program for at-risk neighborhood elementary school students.

The transition process is expected to proceed smoothly for the remainder of the academic year. This year has been momentous in the 100-year history of Ellis with the celebration of the Ellis Centennial Laureate and Centennial Gala. It is only fitting that the celebration continue as the accomplishments of Robin Newham are acknowledged. Taking the helm in 2013, Robin has provided strong leadership over the past four years, and for which the Ellis community will be forever grateful.
