Computer Science in the Upper School

Thank you for the warm welcome to Ellis! I am very excited to be a part of the ongoing efforts here to provide quality STEM education at all levels, and that Ellis has embraced computer science as an important part of 21st century learning.

The act of learning computer science is like learning to think; it requires computational thinking, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. Coding is becoming a basic literacy; everyone should understand how to think logically and how technology works. Personally, I love empowering students to bring their ideas to life through making, and to showcase their creativity in a science that relies on precision.
In the Upper School, we are excited to expand our computer science offerings. The existing Introduction to Computer Science elective will continue to focus on learning the basics of programing languages primarily through the use of Python and Minecraft modding.

Later in the year, students will apply these building blocks when they program Arduino microcontrollers. This year, Ellis has added a second elective, Computer Science II, in which students will add a new language to their repertoire, Java. Java is a widely used language in the industry that can be used in conjunction with Android Studio to create apps, as we will do in the upcoming months.

Finally, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to reach more students in the Upper School through EOW courses. Sophomores will participate in a four session crash course in the many facets of computer science which will include programming, app design, web design, and more. Juniors will take a closer look at CS Principles through a short “CS Unplugged” course in which they will investigate computer algorithms and more complex computer concepts without ever touching a computer.
