Ellis Junior Awarded Grant for the Empowerment of Women and Girls

Pittsburgh, Pa. - Ellis junior Jordyn Tomlin, of Penn Hills, has been named the 2016 awardee of the Marcie WATERMAN Love ’56 International Travel Grant for the Global Empowerment of Women and Girls. Jordyn will spend send four weeks in Nepal this summer, working with organizations such as PHASE (Practical Help Achieving Self-Empowerment) and Next Generation Nepal. PHASE works to improve access to education in rural areas and Next Generation Nepal reconnects trafficked Nepali children to their families.
Jordyn's passion for working with girls in developing countries began with the screening of the documentary Girl Rising, about the importance of educating girls world-wide, in 8th grade. Now she has been awarded the opportunity to pursue that dream in Nepal, and bring those lessons back to The Ellis School as her senior project. Jordyn says she sees this opportunity as a vehicle to not only “promote a larger discussion about the obstacles facing women and girls in Nepal, but also as a means to empower the girls at Ellis to band together to solve problems affecting girls around the world.”

“Jordyn’s selected program couldn’t be more perfect for her given her dedication to promoting greater educational access for children, both in Pittsburgh and globally. She will be working with energetic and groundbreaking organizations to give girls and women the opportunity to thrive in their community and achieve their potential,” said Ellis faculty member Dr. Susan Corbesero, Head of Global Initiatives.

The Marcie WATERMAN Love ’56 International Travel Grant for the Global Empowerment of Women and Girls was established at Ellis in 2015 and was inspired by Ms. Love's own experiences traveling in developing countries. These experiences forever changed her and fortified her work as work as an advocate for women's equality and independence. Ms. Love found Jordyn’s proposal compelling and closely aligned with the award’s mission of fostering the empowerment of women. The Award supports an Ellis student pursuing an independent study-abroad project of her own design aimed at empowering women in developing countries.

The Ellis School is Pittsburgh’s only independent school for girls, serving students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The mission of The Ellis School is to prepare, empower, and inspire each and every young girl through an excellent education in an all-girls environment.
