Ellis Treated to Installation Art Created by Gigi Nieson

On Friday, November 6, Gigi Nieson, class of 2016, created an art installation and performance piece in the school breezeway. In response to an AP Studio assignment, which prompted the class to somehow use the route from home to Ellis, Gigi designed this project. She biked back and forth through the breezeway, and used different colors of chalk attached to her back bike wheel to track her progress.
“The lines with the chalk is representative of the distance that I bike to school to and from per week. The different colors represent the day [of the week]. So I bike about 2 miles… and then the ten miles that I bike per week is equal to a certain amount of meters, which I measured how many meters the breezeway was, which is 40 meters. Then I divided that by 40 to get how many times I have to go back and forth across this, and it’s 403, but at this point I’ve kind of just based it on how much chalk I was using, because I estimated earlier how much it would run out, like the distance to which it would run out, so it’s about 10 pieces of chalk per day,” Gigi explained as she biked along the breezeway.

Her fellow AP Studio classmates and teacher were excited to see the project come to fruition.

“I think it’s great because she’s bringing installation and performance art into the daily life of the school,” Ms. Moldovan, the AP Studio teacher, spoke of Gigi’s impact on the Ellis community.
