Ellis Latin teacher awarded NEH grant

Ellis faculty continue to lead the way in the region and around the world. World language teacher and Latin language scholar Dr. Victoria Jordan has been awarded a prestigious National Endowment for the Humanities grant to take part in a five-week seminar study of Dante’s Commedia. She will travel to Siena, Italy this summer to be immersed in Dante’s world and to explore the city’s ancient and medieval art, history, and architecture. Of the several hundred upper school teachers who applied for this grant only 15 were chosen.
Dr. Jordan has advanced degrees and is fluent in French, Latin, and Greek. She is a member of the Le Donne Italiane di Pittsburgh society through which women of Italian heritage explore and celebrate their passion for Italian literature, linguistics, and culture. As the child of parents who were born in northern Italy, Dr. Jordan grew up in a home where honoring her Italian heritage was important. While she has always been able to read Italian, after a three-year personal study, she has become a fluent speaker of the language.

Dr. Jordan has taught Latin at The Ellis School since 1998. In 2015 she was one of only four people in the United States selected by the College Board to oversee the grading of 11th and 12th grade AP Latin Exams. Dr. Jordan, along with three other Latin scholars (two of whom are college professors), supervised dozens of teachers grading Latin AP exams. This was the fourth time that Dr. Jordan has served as a national leader for the AP Latin exams. She has served as a College Board AP Latin test grader for 16 consecutive years.

Congratulations to Dr. Jordan!
