Ellis History Teacher Working With ACLU

“Most Americans know about the basic ideas of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, but are largely unaware of the context in which these were written, or the ways that they impact all of us," said Ellis history teacher Rick Malmstrom.  Malmstrom, working with the Pittsburgh’s chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, is hoping to address these issues in the ACLU's continuing educational series “Civics for Grown Ups.”
The four-part series takes place each Wednesday evening in May at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh in Squirrel Hill. Classes are taught by experienced attorneys and educators including Anthony Infanti, associate dean at the University of Pittsburgh Law School, Ubong Akpan and Marshall Dayan of the Federal Public Defender’s office, and Rick Malmstrom, a former attorney and current member of the Ellis History Department.

Barb Feige, deputy director of the ACLU noted that, “We hope that teaching folks about their civil rights will raise their awareness about when those rights and those liberties are being infringed upon, and so that they can recognize when that happens and speak out about it.”

Rick notes that, “Talking with adults about topics that I usually address with juniors and seniors has been great fun.”
